Most little things were big when I was small

Then you'd appreciate a red rubber ball

Footballs and new hurley sticks few could afford

They would have to be shared and safely stored

Many a broken hurley was fixed with tin

To throw broken ones away would be a sin

You got some toys once a year at christmas

And Sundays and holidays were reserved for mass

We'd read comics to see if Dick was in danger

Then ride Roy Rogers Trigger with the Lone Ranger

Not one of the stores in town were ever open

An unwritten law rarely ever broken

It was only considered a day of leisure

Reserved for church sport rest and other pleasure

Like listen to the big game on the radio

With Michael O'Hehir with his blow by blow

With no game we might play ball in the alley

Or hunt for rabbits with salt in the valley

Often in the lake we would fish hours for pike

Bringing them in a bag on our mother's bike

On rainy evenings we played darts or rings

Snakes and ladders or draughts with men and kings

On the melodian mom would play tunes

And that's a way to while away afternoons

Or just sit around the fire telling old tales

Or maybe old ghost stories in great details

The long summers evenings were a delight

Often it was not dark until near midnight

Ah the events of youth were so pleasant

But I'm way too old to do them at present

Old age plays such awful tricks on mind and body

I'd rather use the rocker with a hot toddy

Nothing bad has happened so far yet I feel stricken
Amid such raw beauty my heart began to quicken
I was on the small road a mile from my old abode
In my eyes were sad tears I could barely see the road
I was finally home and my heart and soul were filled
Fifty years ago I departed young poor and unskilled
I got caught up in business and I also entertained
When I did not come in summer my mother complained
I will not know many neighbors nor will they know me
Those who didn't go away will know my family tree
To see the daisies dancing in a field of grass so green
Or see bundles of oats being gathered by a colleen
I remember her so fondly when I was young and shy
That lovely dark haired princess the apple of my eye
To see the furze on the hill or golden fields of wheat
They are not mowing it with a scythe it's now obsolete
To walk the country's lanes where blackberry bushes grew
Or watch the new sunrise in a field of morning dew
Around the little cottage windows see the ivy crawl
Or roses in the summer on the white washed gable wall
When I was five I was never allowed to go this far
Nor be outside at night beneath a bright moon or star
In the shadows might be a scary pookey or banshee
And I would have to go to bed no matter how I'd plea
As a lad I ran on this road fell and skinned my knees
Or rode a bicycle too fast in the evening breeze
In the local lake we caught fresh fish for Friday food
Properly cooked inside only the tinkers barbecued
We even had a man made sweat house which cured some ills
That was the old times before a hundred thousand pills
Our old church was hit by one Cromwell cannon Ball
He is long gone down to hell and it still did not fall
There were forts and a dolmen over burial mounds
And certain other evil places that were out of bounds
We often shot rabbits with an old beat up twenty two
And put marks inside on the door to see how much we grew
Walls had to be maintained to keep in wandering goats
And others rebuilt to protect the years hay and oats
Living in the country the day rarely ends at dark
Even after sunset we'd play football in the park
Long summer days sunlight was with us almost until ten
At four next morning the sun was in the sky again
We still have a summer bonfire from the pagan era
First seen by Saint Patrick on the holy Hill of Tara
I passed the holy well from which we drew fresh water
When the ass would hee haw there would be children's laughter
We had to help parents with the hay the turf and spuds
And on Saturday in the bath made a lot of suds
You'd be dressed up for confession like it was a feast
Afraid of your young life that you would anger the priest
In my father's time punishment might be ten lashes
Prior to that it used to be sack cloth and ashes
How many times we started to school so ill prepared?
The nearer you got to the school the more we were scared
At mass every Sunday morning I brought the priest wine
And men who could not afford a belt used baling twine
At noon and six we would hear the distant church bell chime
One neighbor burned rocks in a kiln and wound up with lime
I remember the old men with Woodbine stained fingers
Old women with snuff that's a memory that lingers
With all this Irish scenery at our finger tips
Why do so many of us Irish leave on planes or ships
Maybe to find out better places to search and probe
And then realize this is the best place on the globe
It's amazing how much you forget when far away
Now it seems like it all happened only yesterday

The gory drums of warfare once more beating

The options are only death or retreating

Mister Putin is on his righteous campaign

To bring Russian "democracy" to Ukraine

We hear the country is about to collapse

Most of us have trouble finding it on maps

Thus, be with God or a refugee center

With little chance of a change as you enter

To fear forever the awful wayward bombs

Adapting to donated handouts and alms

In times of invasion there are few white knights

In most invasions there are few human rights

With neighbors you disagree you should not fear

Yet often those are the ones that disappear

The men often march off smartly in platoon

As carefree as if war was just a cartoon

Oh, when oh when shall we all finally learn

That many men who march out will not return.

The man who must leave behind his loving bride

With children who will never have a male guide

Towns shops and farmland holdings wind up misshaped

While men are away at war women are raped

Often a brute with a big gun misbehaves

So many victims wind up in unmarked graves

The living remain in sorrow and bemoan

Loved ones forever remembered on a stone

The waste of so much young life is appalling

In the wrong place when a bullet came calling

A precious young live snuffed out for evermore

Just to sate the ego of a man of war

Dividing spoils some allies may disagree

The losers are punished while bullies go free

I sat on the old stile in a bit of dread
Apprehensive of the day that lay ahead
Another Autumn day of boredom and gloom
In my senior national school third class room
I had been detained in third another year
That punishment to me was far too severe
To my learning I easily could apply
Kept back because of blindness in my left eye
I still have twenty twenty in the other
The quarrel was really with my mother
With little schooling time she used the bookshelf
And she always tried to stand up for herself
She stood up for us little children likewise
Regardless of our ages or shapes or size
Such ungodly traits could be a powder keg
And had to be taken down at least a peg
If you were poor then ready funds were meager
You could not get ahead by being eager
Most slow and average students were ignored
Teachers did not have to answer to a board
Average schoolchildren's futures were unplanned
Who needed too much learning on the farmland
Corporal punishment was often and quick
It was not chastisement but a sally stick
So if you should be a teacher be prudent
It's not you who's important it's the student
Recall the wee boy on the stile years ago
The seeds had been planted but were not let grow

I dreamed the walls were closing in after our romance
At three o'clock in the morning in a heavy trance
I had gone to bed with milk and cookies before nine
I'd have been better with whiskey or a glass of wine
In the dream I was in a cell only eight by ten
With a jailer inside in the hall two police men
The door was restricted with a master lock and chains
And on my wrists and ankles were a few more restrains
I said to my jailer that I failed to understand
How crooks were roaming free but yet I was on remand
He replied be wasn't told why I was a new inmate
Rumor was I had not shown up for a second date
The girl in question said she could never understand
Because the night before was such a great one night stand
This is the new punishment and men need to be warned
This is what you can expect from women who are scorned

It is February 14 St Valentines Day

If you were here I'd be happy and gay

Someone who is pleasant and mature

To make me happy and secure

To hold me tight in a loving squeeze

Under a full moon and swaying palm trees

I'm moping like my feet were mired in cement

My lonely heart  feels like it's only fifty percent

It could be fused forever if you were mine

So then would you be my Valentine

It's nine this February morning I'm awake and perspiring

The boiler downstairs has been going all night since my retiring

No matter what it is outside inside it stays at sixty-five

You have to have plenty of oil if you are going to survive

Two eggs and bacon are on the pan the pork sausages are browned

It's twenty seven degrees outside and there is snow on the ground

Tom Roe on the  radio said on 145 there's ice spots on the road

And on 23b over near Leeds a salt truck has just dropped a big load

On 23 near Wave Farm there is a four wheel drive in the ditch

They say it will be an hour before he is hooked up to a hitch

There's a three vehicle pile up over on Hearts Content

A bread van a Volkswagon and a big truck of cement

He said the school buses are crawling and will be late for class

And over at Lady of Knock they have cancelled daily mass

It's only early morning and already there's loads of bad news

I'm going back to my warm bed I don't need another excuse
