I met a girl from Arizona that should end my search

She owned a forest in Oregon full of oak and birch

That’s not the end of my troubles you must think again

For every problem I have she has at least ten

You know I have problems with English grammar

When she loses her temper she goes for the hammer

A two by four an iron bar or any thing that’s handy

And she often did this in front of my uncle and my auntie

Yet when she’s not angry my life is full of thrills

She has loads of money and I have loads of bills

She was the only daughter of her Wicklow Irishman named Grady

Who panned for gold in the west and met an Indian lady

Just as her father was about to separate his scalp from his brains

And throw whatever was left to the howling wolves on the plains

They had one only daughter and she inherited a half a million trees

And her wood is shipped on her sailing boats all over the seven seas

The smallest thing will set her off she’s very temperamental

She says she doesn’t care if I come or go she’s no way sentimental

Yet when she’s not angry our lives are full of thrills

And I would never divulge what happens when we go up in the hills

Do you remember the day we walked the lonely road

The odor all around us of the meadow just mowed

There was tension in the air things had to be discussed

You were leaving and my love for you was still robust

You knew then I loved you dearly but I did not cling

I could not see why you refused my engagement ring

I had to promise I'd be true yet you broke the bond

Months after our parting I feel like I have been conned

You went to save up money but you forgot the plot

I heard it through the grapevine you are now into pot

No more are you the darling girl I met in fourth class

No more meadows for you now it is different grass

If your parents heard this news their hearts would be broken

If they finally find out I will not have spoken

I kept the home fire burning while you went to explore

Not even one call or letter I shall wait no more.

On the first Friday of the month, you appeared.

My heart began to race, and I felt weird.

I felt my face turn warm so I must have blushed.

I'm not sure what I said I am sure I gushed.

I had to recover quickly and behave correct.

If I messed this up,I would have no self-respect.

You talked so openly with me no way snooty.

Only once before had I seen such pure beauty

If you had make-up on it was very discreet

I would have to consign you to the most elite.

Though I had worked all day I forgot fatigue

As I talked, I know it was not in my league.

Over many subjects you led the merry way

Like a ballerina in an oral ballet

We stretched each other's patience with dumb wit.

But when it came to puns it was time to quit

I never shall forget those moments that were ours

You said you never had enjoyed such happy hours.

A glorious week of which there was no equal

This September there may well be a great sequel.

I am in love with Miss Coleen Fenton who works in Edgewood Falls

Her father said she is never there whenever I make phone calls

He says just leave our wee Coleen alone she's not yet twenty four

I wish he'd pack up his bags today and go back to Tullamore

Dermot can't get rid of me so easily I will not vamoose

Whenever he's not looking she gives me extra cranberry juice

I love all things about her especially how the drinks she pours

Her mother won't give her time off so we could have fun outdoors

Her father told her she could not date customers or clientele

Or drummers banjo players or other musical personnel

I think he's taking this protection thing a little bit too far

I'll ask her to pack up her bags and we'll go back to Mullingar

I asked her if she had any serious thoughts of eloping

She said if we did that her father would have a hard time coping

I love her Irish face with blue eyes that are truly angelic

I wish we'd pack up two bags and we could go back to Mount Mellick

When I ask her if she loves me truly she gives me a big smile

That is surely all an Irishman needs to make his red blood boil

I'm so lonely for six months while she studies at Fordham College

But then every summer she returns with so much more knowledge

I don't know if I can keep up with her when she gets those degrees

So I better take some night classes and review my abc's

You know I am fond of Coleen and I really am sincere

I do not want her to spent her life in McGraths pouring beer

If her father and mother had their way we would never have fun

They'd like for her to go back to Laois and become a nun
