I admired you from across the room and you caught my glance

We smiled at each other and it was potential romance

Then and there I had to make up my mind and decide

If you were the kind of woman I wanted by my side

As I made my way across I was feeling strong and brave

Yet I did not know how you were going to behave

If you had rebuffed me then the meeting would be spoiled

If you had acted scared of meeting me and recoiled

You accepted me and included me in the rapport

Over all that evening you were an entertaining sort

Over the next few weekends we rarely were alone

We also sent texts or were often talking on the phone

I took you to East Durham to see a new Irish show

And snowboarded on the Windham mountain in the fresh snow

You said you worked in Albany in one of the Malls

But you were so busy you could not accept any calls

We were travelling so smoothly with no bumps in sight

And our future together surely was looking bright

Then you mentioned the little problem with your credit line

That you would get an extension if I would only sign

You said your insurance and inspection was expiring

And your wagon needed new plugs new coils and new wiring

The interest was only one percent above prime

And you promised you would make payments every month on time

When the second payment was due you were not around

You were acting like a hedgehog who had gone under ground

Your responsibility you seemed to be shirking

And somehow or other your phone was never working

Not knowing where you worked led to major irritation

The cops might have found you had we that information

I went to the bank my agreement to try to edit

And prevent a bad mark going on my perfect credit

They said the cases against you were rather complex

That I was now lucky that you are already my ex

They said this was not the first and probably not the last

As you had cheated at least four more fellas in the past

I paid off the whole loan to save interest and late fees

I would not take you back if you begged me on bended knees

They said you would be charged as a repeating offender

That you are in Texas with little chance of surrender

When I thought of the hopes I had with you for the future

I was unaware I was picking up a moocher

The exact moment I met you you were the one chosen

But you have been so mean my heart is truly frozen

Perhaps I can get my money back by claiming a tort

And go to Judge Marilyn Millian in Peoples court

I'm glad the winter is over it was so dreary

I'm glad i wasn't on the shores of Lake Erie

Most other winters I spent cold months inside

Many people have done the same other years and died

This winter I worked in a garage and felt the chill

My toes and fingers were cold I thought I'd be ill

I never realised car garages could be so cold

After working in rooms that were heat controlled

I started doing tune ups and fuel injections

Deleting check engines lights for state inspections

After that I graduated to automatic transmissions

Which was supposed to be fixed by skilled technicians

I often wondered if my fixed car could go in rough terrain

when there was mud or snow or ice or heavy rain

I learned the difference between two and four wheel drive

which when there is snow and ice can help you survive

There is no greater feeling if you're stuck in a ditch

Than to put it into neiutral and change the drive switch

I learned all about the liquids fluids and oils

And how all the spark plugs have different coils

The steering now has inner and outer joints

And most mechanics today don't have to set points

I changed brake pads and discs and replaced rotors

And for power windows I had to put in new motors

We try to keep as many spare parts as we can in stock

But sometimes the price of absorbers can cause shock

I tell them to add brake fluid if the light is red

And often check tires to make sure they have thread

They should use the inflator for the right pounds

And come in to see if they hear any strange sounds

If it's making too much noise it's probably the exhaust

You might have to replace the convertor regardless of cost

If you see us often we'll take care of the aiutomobile

It'll take cre of you if you're not a nut behind the wheel

Our life was full of joy my heart was full of hope

I let you get away I must have been a dope

Our meeting was like a magic faitytale

But I was as slow in my ways as a snail

when we met at midnight there was snow on the ground

And you were stuck in the ice by the playground.

When I drove up the road with my four-wheel drive

You were so happy to see some help arrive

Meeting you so close to home was so bizarre

The prettiest girl I'd ever seen so far

I was practically speechless I confess

Prayers answered for the lady in distress

You looked like you were frozen it was ten degrees

Nervously I asked if you'd like a cup of cheese

You laughed at that and the air between us thawed

I knew I had met a winner not a fraud

That night as we drank coffee I shall not regret

Our many happy days I shall never forget

It was not to be why did we fall apart.

I never shall forget when you took my heart

Now that you are gone, I'm going to take stock

It's going to take time to get over the shock

My life a bit shattered and I am not thrilled

I cannot mope around I must somehow rebuild

I thought the love we had would never sour

I thought we'd be together every living hour

I let you get away I must have been crazy

Give me another chance I still love you Gracie

The Wake

 The Wake

You coming here means so much

You say it is no big deal

It is so thoughtful of you

And it assists us to heal

We often complain we are so busy

That we are almost overrun

But then God does something

That can not be undone

Some could not make it

They had things to do

But you found the time

That is always par for you

You are one who worries

You are the one who cares

When we pray for my mother

We will include you in our prayers

In spring the flowers came on the furze and I held your hand in mine

And picked Mrs. Kelly daffodils in the shadow of a pine

We fished with fake rods in the river but never caught a pike

We walked for hours each summer day neither of us owned a bike

We smelled the blooming heather and heard the skylark in the bog

And saw the mass of frogspawn eggs left in the pond by a frog

We often saw mother ducks or pheasants pretend to be distressed

Acting like her wing was broken to lead us away from her nest

During the long summer days we often heard the odd corncrake

And saw the young swans swimming who were born on the local lake

They say our visiting summer swallows may have flown from Cape Horn

The young ones were not the only emigrants who were Irish born

We saw and admired as each species struggled for survival

How birds nests build up high saved eggs from an animal rival

As we observed the birds and animals our knowledge increased

And we often saw the love and kindness of the wild beast

Of course no lions or tigers in our parish did circulate

And foxes badgers or rabbits did not try to intimidate

Who can forget the bleating of weaned lambs trying to recover

Much like the loneliness of a broken hearted human lover

The lovely odor around your house from your mother's garden plots

Or the roses and other flowers my mother grew in pots

The golden wind blown fields of the annual wheat and oats

The pure white of shorn sheep the bleating of the farmers goats

Often on a summers evening when the weather had been hot

We would chase after rainbows for the leprechauns golden pot

All year round we played outside in that we were consistent

The rain did not bother us we must have been water resistant

There were no TV's radio's or any other thing electric

We measured in feet and inches we had not yet heard of metric

We walked to school together many people thought we were sibs

And to keep other boys at bay I often told outright fibs

In my brain I knew you were a winner and you filled up my heart

I knew love was happening I was lonely when we were apart

Alas those great days are gone we just have memories of then

And though we may wish they would return they shall not come again

You know I wanted to kiss you often but there was no invite

Now I realize there is no prize for being too polite

Then a ticket came from America and like a bird you've flown

I thought we'd work the two farms together but now I'm all alone

Do you have a friend who to whom life seems unfair?
Who of troubles and worries gets more than their share?
Did you ever try to make this person’s life better?
By calling on the phone or writing them a letter
Did you tell them you remembered them in prayer?
That God would lift from their soul their sad despair
Did you tell them you are forever their friend?
Until the pain in their heart comes to an end
Did you offer to take them on a good long walk?
And that you’d stay silent unless they wanted to talk
Did you hug them and not bug them?
Did you praise or condemn?
Did you tell them you loved them and they were a gem?
Did you promise to help with the grocery shopping?
Did you promise to help with the cleaning and mopping?
Did you bring a CD with their favorite singer or song?
Did you sit together on the sofa and sing along?
If you do any of this they have no complaint
Because they have a friend who is really a saint.

Sometimes we gather to say goodbye

To reflect reminisce and sadly cry

To mourn Patricia our dear friend

To give solace to family at the end

We remember good times and good deeds

We remember when we ourselves had needs.

Patricia was willing to hold our hand

She was there to support and understand

On God's ship we are just a crewman

Some years metered out to each human

It really matters how much we rowed

To help our friends carry their daily load

At a happy memory we may smile

Picked by someone from their mental file

Then we kneel after sharing the grief

Even though our visit was brief

We gather here to pray out loud

And harness the love of our crowd

This evening is full of feeling

May it help a little with the healing.

For the last three evenings I have microwaved alone

This is not the kind of thing I normally would condone

You normally have a burger hopping in the skillet

Or pick a big piece of steak and go outside and grill it

You may have gone back to your mother where you were raised

And left me here all alone heartbroken and almost dazed

I think it was Tuesday that you made your secret get away

You did not even leave my daily breakfast on the tray

You went into the garage and took my electric car

The battery was not fully charged you can't have gone far

I'm not good at regular cooking so I think I'm effed

I've come to the conclusion that you've finally up and left

My cooking may not be described as genuine gourmet

But I am learning and it's much better than buffet

There's a McDonald's and a Pizza just down the block

And a take out Chinese open until ten o'clock

There are hot dogs and sausages at Cumberland Farm

And Juices groceries and cereal at CVS Pharm

I've found that living on my own is not too severe

I did not start boozing just at dinner have a beer

I daily read all the news and the stock market report

You know I'm in love with the Mets and other New York sport

You'll have to return my car the title I won't release.

Or else I'll have to report it stolen to the police

Nature had no walls or borders when the world was first designed

nor were there any iron fences to keep man or beast confined

The winds could blow; the river flow and the trees grow very tall

And I'm sure there was noise in the forest whenever one would fall

There was grass and fruit and vegetable so there was no starvation

Even then the strong ruled but without taxation or regulation

There is so much difference between nature and mankind

Are we racing towards a cliff as if we are totally blind?

The world has been here forever and we should enjoy it

Will our generation be the one to forever destroy it?

People act like they invented the blessings nature bestows

But no human who has ever lived could create a rose

Nature not being tampered with can bring us peace and joy

We have to share the wilderness but we should not destroy

That we keep cutting down the trees may lead to our down fall

And if we keep using barrels of gasoline instead of gasohol

Now they want to take oil from sand with water and blasters

Which can causes earthquakes and other man-made disasters

Abandoned oil wells and coal mine are to neighborhoods a blight

Not making money no more gushing oil or tons of anthracite

As long as you are making money no worry about pollution

It's not what you know it's did you make a campaign contribution

All over the world there are fires burning out of control

Deep within our only earth until the pits run out of coal

One of those dirty Russian plumes can be seen from a space station

Meanwhile for miles around there are no animals or vegetation

Some people think information about global warming is flawed

And deny to everybody that the ice caps have ever thawed

We can't go back to simpler times when man roamed earth carefree

And we are barred from Eden because of the apple from the tree

Man pushing the boundaries with nature often collides

when Mother Nature is angry we have winds and high tides

We can build alters and huge churches to our Gods on high

But nature can turn them into rubble in the blink of an eye

If human nature was perfect then I would deduct

that we should be more nature friendly in our daily conduct

Nature had no walls or borders when the world was first designed

nor were there any iron fences to keep man or beast confined.

In spring I've often hiked the wild Appellation trail

And had to find some kind of shelter from heavy large hail

I skied large American mountains and flashed by big trees

Was scared of Covid nineteen but didn't catch the disease

I've shivered in houses when I heard thunder clashes

And hid behind ditches when I saw lightning flashes

I walked on large frozen lakes then could hear the ice crack

And rode through some desert sandstorms on a camels back

In Florida I thought I was meeting my creator

I was walking down the street and met an alligator

Walking by a graveyard I heard noises and got spooked

Went Bungee jumping one day and then violently puked

I sat too far out one day when I cut a tree limb

And got stung by a jellyfish when I went to swim

I got lost one night on the scary streets of Madrid

But the worst of these were not the scariest thing I did

I've walked Harlem streets and rode a wild bull on the plains

Some of the scariest nights were on haunted Irish lanes

It wasn't what you saw on the road made you pee in your pants

But the memory of stories told by uncles and aunts
