I got the surprise of my life in a store in Cairo today.

A girl excused herself, but it was I who was blocking her way.

She had mentioned my name today you don't often find such manners.

In today's society of phones selfies and instant scanners

I wanted to know how she knew me, so I chattily remained.

I engaged her in simple conversation which was no way strained.

I was truly impressed with her maturity at her young age.

She became a teen last time we met now she is earning a wage.

That is why it is so important a young child not to insult.

Because in a few blinks of an eye they are a full-grown adult.

The nasty comment or action can be treated like oppression.

While the kind word spoken, or deed done can leave a great impression.

Named Loretta after Gran she would be the apple of her eye.

But her grandma grandpa and Daddy look down with pride from on high.

I hope her life is happy and may she always be so serene.

A whole big, exciting life ahead for she is only eighteen.

The beauty I saw before me today could make an old man sing.

Daffodils and tulips are not the only things that bloom in spring.

As I was sitting in a restaurant I heard a couple fight

After listening for a while it was hard to say who was right

It was also very hard to decide which of them was wrong

One was stubborn as a mule the other was headstrong

It was hard to tell which was which neither was consistent

But to have their side heard both were most insistent

She said you spent every spare moment in the local bar

He said whenever I come home early you jump in the car

Then I don’t see you again for many, many hours

After I’ve helped with homework and with nightly showers

So then you see what I go through with children into sports

And going to see teachers when they get bad reports

Taking care of three children is no bed of roses

Every day I have dirty clothes and in winter dirty noses

No matter what I say he said you immediately are opposed

For any of my suggestions your mind is quickly closed

There were no slurred words so they both must be sober

I wonder if they will be together still come next October

Maybe they are the kind of people who just like to bicker

I’d hate to be in their house later if they add a bottle of liquor

It went back and forth between them about school and PTA

In the end it made no sense it was just blah, blah, blah

If the sun was shining one would complain about the weather

I wonder how a couple like this ever got together

Once upon a time when I was younger and single

I lived in digs with others in the town of Dingle

There were only three of us that meant the rent wasn't bad

But alas there was only one bathroom and that was sad

Two guys and a girl that made up our little trio

Maryanne and I and a man from Cork man named Leo

Some wee problems arose because of our working hours

And when it was ok to wash hair and take showers

Maryann made sure we kept the place neat and tidy

And collected the rent from us two every Friday

Swearing was never allowed we had to behave

And we would have to clean up the sink after a shave

We were not expected to be living like a monk

But when we got home at night we'd better not be drunk

We often heard complaints from her about how she slaved

Especially any time the toilet seat was raised

It did not take too much to get her temper going

And she was no way averse at all to throwing

Often yolks and eggshells hung for seconds on the wall

Then in frustration she'd sit on the sofa and bawl

Con and I had responsibility and duty

She could cook and she always had a pot of brewed tea

She could cook like my mother we always had great meals

You could hear her coming by the clicking of her heels

No bare chests allowed any time or place nor bare feet

Sofa's were not for meals at the table you had to eat

Dirty clothes were not supposed to be hung on the floor

And when peeing or pooping you closed the bathroom door

You can't do this you can not do that she was so strict

It was good training for marriage but so much conflict

I regretted the agreement we had in advance

That amongst the three of us there would be no romance

After nine months passed my admiration for her warmed

And I liked myself better I think I was transformed

When I admitted my ardor there was no great shock

But she said I'd have to sell the little farm in Knock

The problem was the Cork man he was cramping my style

When I told him he'd have to move he became hostile

He reminded me of our pact I would not be cowed

I told him I considered three too  much of a crowd

I guess I acted badly I was full of conceit

My once best friend turned on me I wound up on the street

The father who was against our living condition

Boldly dug in his heels and would not give permission.

I often wonder as I toil daily in New York.

If there was some nasty gossip from the chap from Cork

Shakespeare didn't have to leave home when he was a kid

He wrote and wrote for days on end and made it big at home

He never learned to speak Spanish so he couldn't go to Madrid

He was no better at Italian or Latin so he couldn't go to Rome

Some didn't understand his sonnets others disliked his plays

While others Didn't like Tony or Cleopatra boating on the Nile

Some of his contemporaries hated the way he could turn a phrase

I'm sure others thought he was a heretic and wanted him on trial

i wanted love to last forever

but it didn't work that way

that would be too simple

you would have to stay

time was often wasted

we could not afford

time and time again

good will was not stored

I had a van you had a car we wound up swapping

You wanted some plywood so to Lowes you went shopping

That this would not end well I had a premonition

it was with concern I gave keys for the ignition

I told you the two front wheels were low and needed air

And while you were at it also check out the rear pair

Somewhere on a back road at a stop you did not halt

Now my van is wrecked and it is someone else's fault

You will never admit fault you still are not mature

You could have rented it from U-Haul and be secure

You were one hundred percent wrong charged by the police

So I'm facing a deductible and an increase

I told you no drinking you said I should not worry

How at nine the next morning could your speech be slurry

Your wife called that day and said you were driving impaired

So now I'll have no van while it is being repaired

The driver is critical so maybe detention

Along with that at least a year license suspension

Your wife asked to get the car back I told her good luck

I have keys and fob and you did not return my truck

I'm sure you think because we're friends I should be kinder

Until I see my van I have a slight reminder

I hope your car has decent suspension springs and shocks

Because I need ten bags of cement and building blocks
