Jazz is the music of the fisherman or sailor
It can be real honest or made up from a fable
It can gladden seamstresses or even a tailor
Whether standing up or cross legged on his table

If you take an old tune and add a little pizzazz
Add a little of your own flair then you have Jazz
I think it was around New Orleans it was first found
It never has been written the words you cannot impound

I don't think jazz is a genre it really is a mood
it's just merry and happy and full of optimism
It sounds like fried chicken and finger licking food
It's hard to listen to jazz and think of terrorism

Every musician has his own ideas and he plays them freestyle
It can be played by a single musician or with rank and file
It can be played in the backroom of a disrespected dive
Or in a hotel in New York renowned for classic waltzes and jive

It is the music of the people single or in crowds
Once the music starts up the toes will soon be tapping
Your heart will soar at once into the distant clouds
You'll hate when it is over for by then you're clapping

Would you have the courage to ask a Jazz man to conform?
To play a song as it had been written not in his type of free form
To go back and play the written word without any innovation
I think he would rather face a week of total starvation
