I bought a fixer upper I am a renovator

A three story with an attic but no elevator

It was a two family, but we bought it as a start

Little did I know it would one day nearly break my heart

To get what we badly wanted we'd invest love and toil

And maybe someday have solar power instead of oil

The walls had many a hole and needed lots of plaster

There were five small and medium bedrooms but no master

There would be a need for nails and screws some brushes and paint

And when progress was slow, I'd need the patience of a saint.

Many of the stairway steps were unstable and creaky

When it rained even slightly the roof was often leaky

It was mostly coldish there was little insulation

I was afraid to go down to check the house foundation

The fence with the neighbors had to be newly constructed

Two days after that the main sewer became obstructed

There was a good size front garden but it was full of weeds

So we went to a gardening shop and bought bulbs and seeds

The back yard with big oaks faced east and had sunshine at dawn

But looked like pigs rooted it and we'd never have a lawn

Electricity was suspect and had to be rewired

The windows were single pane so thermal ones were required

The linoleum on the floors would not warm winter feet

The front porch steps and back deck floor had badly cracked concrete

Of all contrary rooms there the worst was in the front hall

There was a rather small closet there built into the wall

It only stood at five feet six from the ceiling to base

I swear whenever I went in there I had no head space
