When I was growing up they said I lacked ambition
They said I was even too slow to be a mortician
I always listened to the radio I wanted to be a musician
So I went to the music teacher for an audition

I told him I planned to enter many a competition
He said my singing of the scale was a very poor rendition
He played an Irish tune but I couldn’t give the definition
He said if you can’t recognize a jig you can’t play tradition

And since I didn’t have any basics of musical recognition
To take me under his wing would be a waste of tuition
He was of the opinion that I would need a real magician
He said I might be a good mechanic or an electrician
