Some people think we poets should not write a poem
About girl friends we miss or a house we once called home
About a love across the sea, or a hero lost in war
Whether it was in war one or two or they called it the Boar
Some poets write of ghosts and goblins very scary and spooky
I don't blame them for complaining I myself think they are kooky
Others write of Camelot or Robin Hood and his men so brave
Others adore fire belching dragons living far away in a cave
Many poems are about gunslingers in the American West
And about Doc Holliday who was always elegantly dressed
There were many poems written about the men at the Alamo
How they defended that fort against the huge army of the foe
Many poems were written of Alaska and the rush for Gold
Greedy men paid dearly for dreams and died there in the awful cold
Poets from Kerry will brag about their lakes with crystal water
And lovelorn chaps like me will praise the lovely farmer's daughter
Richard Nixon caused Rap to be a brand new Afro poetry style
And brought back the beauty of rhyme again far from the Emerald isle
Books are full of poems for the men who fought for the green white and gold
And men who died of hunger in H Block on the blanket in the cold
The poet has picked a solitary life full of challenge and doubt
One day the words are charming and rhyming the next day there is drought
But when we poets hit the words right there is no better feeling
We feel like Lionel Richie must have felt Dancing on the Ceiling
So if you are good at English then take poetry's long and winding path
The ones who are good at adding and subtraction they should stick with Math
