Raised on poems and tales
Of heroes with details
Of men who crossed the waves
And wound up in foreign graves
Whether on the American plains
Or in European campaigns

They have fought with France and Spain even the Boers
And fought against England just to even up the scores
The grass grows green in many lands thanks to Irish blood
And many a brave man died in trenches inches thick in mud
Because of their bravery many tyrants were over thrown
And they are buried far from home often without a stone
No other place was Irish bravery more clearly on display
Than on the battlefields of the civil war in far Americay

The priests went to the African missions
And taught little black babies Irish traditions
The nuns were not far behind and taught them to pray
Jack Duggan robbed the rich in Australia far away
He said the money was for the poor and destitute
And rode around on a horse in a steel type of suit

In the Wild West some were on the wrong side of the law
And wound up full of bullets or they were slow on the draw
When swords were not needed they fought within the ring
We had many Irish champions before Tyson or Don King
Many a man spent lonesome nights on the American prairie
On cattle ranches far from home and his native Tipperary.

Today we’ve climbed up the ladder and we are nearing the top
Our sons are fireman and on most streets you’ll find an Irish cop
We have stars in football and baseball and many other sports
And lawyers and judges tripping each other in the highest courts
But the time we have gained the most is at the elections
With a man named John F.Kennedy with Wexford connections
