Winters Quiet © 2018TonyFallon 1113

Winter is so peaceful and calm once we put back the clock
By five in the evening it's dark and no one wants to walk
People seem to become less social even during the day
I think some of them almost hibernate until early May
They use their cars for everything and get no exercise
They won't even put out the garbage cans before sunrise

Then of course some old folks have barely enough to eat
And with the price of oil they cannot afford much heat
So they close the doors tightly and watch TV in bed
Then when spring comes around you find a few of them are dead

The children's bicycles are in the shed until spring
Any plastic swimming pools are gone and so is the swing
The cops won't let kids use battery operated scooters
And everybody whines when they use the computers

The sidewalks of the suburbs are missing young and frail
And there are very few walkers in a snowstorm or a gale
The city kids do not have horses or pigs to feed
And God forbid they'd go to the library and read

To ask them do chores or the dishes leads to a fight
So the mother keeps her mouth shut that's Winter Quiet
They can't be sent to their room instead of getting a smack
There are more gizmos in there than in Radio Shack

When we do get big snow storms a quietness descents
The skis do come out and there are other snow events
With that excitement over they retreat into their shell
And when we'll see them again is very hard to tell.

I can't say I regret not hearing the motorcycles roar
Or the young punk burning rubber with four on the floor
I miss the distinctive sound of the ice cream truck and the birds
The deer are unnoticeable as they move around in herds

Then hunters come a hunting and hide behind oaks and pines
Trespassing on farmers land regardless of the warning signs
During the hunting season you can hear the rifles crack
Then see hunters heading to the city a dead deer on the rack

When the snow sneaks down the valley our captivity begins

Then we old folk become trapped inside like sardines in tins
I keep in touch with humanity through Bingo and twenty five
But if there is heavy snow or ice on the road I will not drive
By the summer I've put on weight and have to go on a diet
I eat junk food when watching TV in the winter's quiet
