Mother’s Day © Tony Fallon 5/13/2017

Happy mother’s day to you no matter where you are
For this one day of the year, you are treated like a star
I don’t think this is fair and I’ll make my case bluntly
If we are going to have your Day we should have it monthly
Everyone's mother is different no two are alike
We are so very lucky that they never go on strike
Remember how she tucked you in with the thick bedspread
And asked you if all your books for next day’s school were read
If it wasn’t for your mother you would never say your prayers
So when you’d die you would not be going to the man upstairs.
One mother can be a baker and make the greatest apple pie
Another make an egg sandwich for which you’d gladly die
At dinner time she always made sure that you were fed
Many times she was a little hungry when she went to bed
Irish mothers try to rear their children to be first rate
Then just when they are fully grown they emigrate
Raising sons to fight and often die in a far off war
Or fighting over some girl in a New York or Boston bar
A mother never forgets her children even when they're far away
A child should not forget their mother on this Mother’s Day.
