Noeleen Ni Cholla © Tony Fallon sept 2017
I met a girl from Donegal a real Irish Coleen
She can speak to you in Gaelic her name is Noeleen
She can speak to you in Gaelic her name is Noeleen
But speaking Gaelic is not her reason for fame
It’s her musical ability which has brought her acclaim
She plays Irish music with passion and without conceit
To hear her perform here in America really is a treat
Within each Irish psyche there is a need that is genetic
To hear our wild native music and words that are poetic
The Sean Nos singer sings in deliberate measure
Telling the world a story in delight and pleasure
Many of her songs are so old they cannot be dated
Many of her songs are so old they cannot be dated
Still can be loved by all without being translated
You can hear the crashing wild Atlantic waves
Or the keening of mourners beside an open grave
You can hear the mournful lonely curlews cry
Or think you hear the lark in a clear blue sky
And songs of war and emigration or unreturned love
Or men who wouldn’t go to the alter without a little
shove
Not every one who passes through adds to our tradition
But Noeleen by writing
originals is achieving her mission
