There’s an empty seat by © Tony Fallon.2016

There’s an empty seat at the Christmas table
There’s no bicycle thrown by the gable
The table is set but there are not enough plates
The one who did all the cooking is now in the States
This once happy home is consumed with gloom
If you ever come back we never touched your room
The hens and the turkeys don’t always get their feeding
No matter how often I’m begging and pleading
When your Mom died you filled the gap like no other
I hope the boys find a wife like you or your mother
The dog goes outside whenever there’s noise
But he won’t even play with the sad gloomy boys
He’s as lonesome for you as I am my daughter
Since you left us all here and went over the water.
Don’t forget our little cottage on the Carlow main road
There will always be open arms for you in our humble abode
